This course is designed to heighten the awareness of Emergency Medical Service and other health care professionals of the unique care and treatment required when rendering care to a special needs patient. Common disorders such as, but not limited to, Autism, Multiple Sclerosis, Cerebral Palsy, Downs Syndrome and Muscular Dystrophy will be discussed. A familiarization, operation and troubleshooting equipment commonly associated with special needs patients such as wheelchairs, lifts, ventilators, tracheostomies, G-Tubes, VP shunts and Baclofen pumps will also be included. Additionally, the assessment, treatment and unique handling requirements for special needs patient will be discussed and the participants will have opportunity to practice these techniques.
