This one-day course is designed to identify the need of scene safety when dealing with a potential envenomation patient, to identify the poisonous snakes and scorpions unique to western Illinois and eastern Missouri, discuss other poisonous snakes frequently kept as pets, provide an understanding of the classification of the various venoms injected by poisonous snakes and scorpions and how each affects the human body. Discussion of the appropriate anti-venom based on the classification and/or type of envenomation. The signs and symptoms of a poisonous envenomation will be reviewed and the steps in providing emergency medical care to an envenomation patient will be discussed. This course is a very useful asset to any EMT-Basic, Intermediate or Paramedic, nurse or physician that works in an area where venomous snakes, spiders and/or reside or are kept as pets.
